Photographing a Recording Studio in Alameda
Infinite Studios in Alameda is a long-established recording studio with a strong connection to the Bay Area music community. Located at 3132 Marina Drive, the studio has provided professional recording, mixing, and mastering services for musicians and producers for decades.
Photographing a space with this kind of history gave me an opportunity to approach the project differently from a typical commercial interior assignment. Rather than focusing only on architecture, I wanted my photographs to capture the atmosphere of a working studio and the specialized equipment and spaces that make it unique.
Recording Studio Photography in the Bay Area
As a freelance photographer working throughout the Bay Area, I enjoy projects where the environment tells an important part of the story. A professional recording studio is very different from an office or commercial property. The equipment, acoustics, control rooms, recording spaces, and overall atmosphere are all part of the experience.
Infinite Studios has a long history of recording and mixing music, with credits associated with a wide range of artists and productions. The studio has also been used for both recording and mastering projects, reinforcing its role within the Northern California music-production community.
On assignment from Advanced Systems Group, my goal was to photograph the facility in a way that reflects that creative history while showing the studio as a professional, functioning environment.
Capturing the Character of Infinite Studios
When I photograph a specialized space, I look for details that might otherwise be overlooked. At a recording studio, that includes the consoles, microphones, instruments, monitoring equipment, control surfaces, acoustic treatments, and the physical relationship between the control room and recording areas.
I use composition and lighting to give these elements visual importance without making the photographs feel overly staged. In a studio environment, even relatively technical equipment can become visually interesting when photographed from the right perspective.
I also wanted the photographs to communicate the sense of creativity associated with the space. The best studio photography should make someone feel as though they could walk through the door, sit down at the console, and begin working.

That distinction influences how I compose and sequence the final images. Instead of producing a generic documentation of the space, I want the photographs to tell a story about what happens there.
