Commercial Real Estate Photography at Jack London Square
As a freelance photographer specializing in commercial properties, I was hired to photograph several available spaces at Jack London Square in Oakland as part of a leasing and marketing effort focused on attracting new tenants. Many of the available properties were hospitality spaces, including this approximately 6,900-square-foot restaurant.
Jack London Square is a distinctive waterfront destination in the East Bay, and the restaurant space presented an interesting photographic challenge. My objective was to create commercial real estate photography that would help prospective restaurant operators understand the scale, layout, functionality, and possibilities of the space before scheduling an in-person tour.
Photographing a Restaurant Space for Leasing
When I photograph a commercial property, I try to show more than a series of attractive rooms. I want the images to help potential tenants understand how the space works.
This restaurant was designed for high-volume food and beverage service and included many of the features a prospective operator would expect from a turnkey restaurant. The layout included a centrally positioned bar, three distinct dining areas, a full commercial kitchen, and substantial walk-in storage.
Rather than photographing each feature as an isolated element, I approached the assignment by showing how the spaces connect. I wanted prospective tenants to be able to follow the flow from the front-of-house dining areas through the service areas and into the back-of-house spaces.
As a freelance photographer, I consider this type of visual storytelling an important part of effective commercial real estate photography. The photographs should answer practical questions while also communicating the character and potential of the property.
Showing the Scale and Flexibility of the Property
One of the most important goals of this assignment was to communicate the size and flexibility of the restaurant. A nearly 6,900-square-foot space offers significant possibilities, but prospective tenants need to be able to visualize how that space could work for their particular concept.
I used carefully selected perspectives to emphasize the proportions of the dining areas and the relationship between different parts of the restaurant. Natural light also played an important role in creating photographs that felt open and inviting while maintaining an accurate representation of the property.
For me, good commercial real estate photography needs to balance atmosphere with accuracy. The images should make a property appealing, but they also need to give potential tenants a realistic understanding of what they’re considering.
Photographing Commercial Properties in Oakland
The waterfront location at Jack London Square adds another important dimension to the property. Oakland’s Jack London Square has a strong connection to restaurants, entertainment, retail, and waterfront activity, making location an important part of the property’s marketing story.
I wanted the photography to support that story by focusing on the characteristics that would matter to a restaurant operator. The interior photographs communicate the existing infrastructure and layout, while the overall presentation helps place the space within the larger context of Jack London Square.
For leasing assignments, professional photography can provide brokers, property owners, and marketing teams with versatile images for websites, listing platforms, brochures, presentations, social media, and other promotional materials.
East Bay Freelance Photographer
I provide commercial real estate photography throughout Oakland and the East Bay, photographing restaurants, retail spaces, office buildings, industrial properties, mixed-use developments, and other commercial properties.
As a freelance photographer, I tailor my approach to the purpose of each assignment. A restaurant available for lease requires a different photographic strategy than an occupied office building or a newly constructed commercial development. In every case, my goal is to create images that clearly communicate the property’s features while highlighting its potential.
This Jack London Square restaurant project is a good example of how professional photography can help market a commercial space. By showing the scale, layout, existing restaurant infrastructure, and flexibility of the property, the photographs give prospective tenants a better understanding of what is possible.
