Residential Real Estate Photography in Berkeley
As a freelance photographer working throughout the Bay Area, I photograph a wide range of properties, from commercial buildings and architectural projects to homes prepared for sale. For this project, I photographed one of five townhomes in a small residential development in Berkeley, creating professional images for a realtor’s MLS listing.
When I approach residential real estate photography, my goal is to create images that accurately represent the property while showing prospective buyers what makes the home appealing. For an MLS listing, photographs are often the first impression a buyer has of a property, so I focus on creating images that are bright, inviting, and carefully composed while maintaining an accurate representation of the home’s size and layout.
Photographing a Distinctive Berkeley Townhouse
This Berkeley townhouse has a distinctive post-modern industrial character that separates it from many of the more traditional homes found throughout the area. The exterior architecture immediately establishes a strong visual identity, and I wanted the photography to capture those architectural characteristics without allowing them to overwhelm the residential appeal of the property.
Inside, the townhouse had been thoughtfully staged for sale. I photographed the individual rooms while also considering how they connect with one another. Because the home extends across three levels, showing the relationship between the different spaces was particularly important.
As a freelance photographer, I don’t simply move from room to room taking photographs. I look at the property as a complete visual story and consider how a potential buyer might experience the home. Composition, camera position, natural light, and the relationship between adjacent spaces all influence how effectively a photograph communicates the property.
Highlighting Indoor-Outdoor Living
One of the strongest features of this Berkeley townhouse is the spacious deck located directly off the kitchen and dining area. Large sliding glass doors create a strong connection between the interior living spaces and the outdoor area.
I made this indoor-outdoor relationship an important part of the residential real estate photography for the property. The deck adds usable living space while also allowing natural light to enter the kitchen and dining area. Showing that connection gives prospective buyers a better understanding of how the home can function for everyday living as well as entertaining.
For me, successful real estate photography isn’t just about making individual rooms look attractive. It’s about identifying the features that can influence a buyer’s decision and making sure those features are clearly communicated through the images.
MLS Photography for Berkeley Real Estate
When I photograph a home for an MLS listing, accuracy is just as important as aesthetics. Buyers need to be able to understand the property’s layout, proportions, and relationship between spaces from the photographs.
My approach combines careful composition with realistic representation. I want the home to look its best, but I also want the images to give potential buyers an honest sense of the property before they schedule a showing.
That balance is particularly important in residential real estate photography, where strong images can help generate initial interest while accurate photography helps set appropriate expectations.
