Commercial Real Estate Photography in San Francisco
As a freelance photographer specializing in commercial properties, I was hired to photograph vacant office space in the historic Rapp Building in San Francisco. The listing agent needed a new collection of professional photographs to support marketing and leasing efforts for the available space.
The Rapp Building is located close to Salesforce Tower, placing it within one of San Francisco’s most recognizable and active commercial districts. For this assignment, I wanted to create images that communicated both the functionality of the available office space and the architectural character of the building.
Photographing a Historic San Francisco Office Building
Historic commercial buildings present an interesting challenge for a commercial real estate photographer. The photography needs to showcase the space as a viable option for modern tenants while also preserving the qualities that distinguish the building from newer office properties.
I focused on the architectural details and proportions of the Rapp Building while photographing the available office areas. My goal was to show how the historic character of the property works alongside a functional office layout that can accommodate contemporary businesses.
Rather than treating the vacant space as simply an empty interior, I approached the assignment as an opportunity to communicate its potential. Careful attention to perspective, natural light, and the flow between different areas helps prospective tenants imagine how they could configure and use the space.
Creating Images That Support Leasing
When I photograph vacant commercial space, I know the images may be a prospective tenant’s first introduction to the property. That makes commercial real estate photography an important component of the leasing process.
For this Rapp Building assignment, I wanted the photographs to provide an accurate representation of the available space while also making it visually compelling. Wide views help establish the size and configuration of the office, while carefully selected compositions highlight architectural details and create a stronger sense of depth.
As a freelance photographer, I consider how every image will ultimately be used. In this case, the photographs were intended for the listing agent’s marketing materials, where they could help generate interest and encourage prospective tenants to schedule a tour.
Showing the Potential of Vacant Office Space
Photographing an empty office requires a slightly different approach than photographing an occupied workplace. Without furniture, employees, or other visual cues, it can be difficult for someone viewing photographs online to understand how the space might function.
I use composition and perspective to help solve that problem. By showing the relationship between rooms and emphasizing the usable areas of the office, I can create photographs that help viewers mentally place furniture, workstations, meeting areas, and other elements within the space.
My objective isn’t to make the property appear something it isn’t. Instead, I want to make its existing characteristics easy to understand so prospective tenants can evaluate whether the space fits their needs.
